Anchors Aweigh! Songs of the U.S. Navy
American Heritage Publishing Company, Inc.
Liner Notes:
Perhaps more than any other branch of America's military, the United States Navy has a wonderfully rich and proud musical tradition. From the earliest days, when chanteys were sung to accompany work aboard ship, to modern times, songs of and about the sea have been an integral part of Navy life. Together, the selections on this album, performed by Navy personnel and recorded on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy, represent a tribute to the Navy's musical Heritage.
Side 1 features the United States Naval Academy Band. Begun in 1853 with 13 men (above, the 1860 band poses with its young mascot), the present complement of 64 musicians is charged with providing music for the Brigade of Midshipmen. Led by Lieutenant John R. Blesdoe, these professional men and--since 1970--women demonstrate their versatility with a rousing series of band numbers.
Side 2 features the 80-member Midshipmen Glee Club, composed of 20 men from each class and led by John B. Talley, the Academy's Director of Musical Activities. Beginning with "Anchors Aweigh," composed by the Academy bandmaster in 1906, the midshipment's repertoire includes sea chanteys, rollicking off-duty songs, the Academy's alma mater--"Navy Blue and Gold"--and concludes with "Eternal Father Strong to Save," the moving hymn that has closed every Academy Chapel service since 1879.

Subject: Great Album
I purchased my copy of this album at the U.S. Navy Museum in Washington DC in 1979 and have enjoyed it through the years. I didn't make the navy a career, but I proudly served one hitch as an enlisted man.

My family owned this album on vinyl and I always enjoyed the wonderful voices and the Navy spirit that the men brought to this production. Thank you for uploading Mr. Brasseur. One caveat...the song Lowlands has a repetitive skip that I wonder if you might try and upload again. That song also has a great solo voice in it and is a highlight of an overall great recording.
